Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, emphasized that administrative and financial corruption is not merely an administrative malfunction but a strategic existential threat to the modern state. Fighting it constitutes an irreversible national and moral commitment. The government has made anti-corruption a top priority by establishing an independent authority dedicated to this cause, strengthening control and inspection mechanisms, and promoting transparency and accountability through the public release of oversight reports.

Ghazouani also highlighted the strong partnership between Nouakchott and Riyadh, based on deep-rooted bonds of brotherhood and friendship, with a convergence of views on regional issues that fosters joint economic projects in industry, energy, and digital technology. He praised the Future Investment Initiative forum in Riyadh as a major international platform to enhance cooperation and showcase Mauritania’s investment opportunities globally.

Regarding the Palestinian issue and the peace plan by former US President Donald Trump for Gaza, Ghazouani described it as a positive development. However, he stressed that its success depends on full compliance with its provisions and a sincere will to prioritize the humanitarian dimension. He reiterated that the two-state solution remains the only option to guarantee security and stability in the region.

Responding to rumors about the deportation of African migrants, the president affirmed that the operations are legal and organized, targeting only those not meeting residency criteria while respecting human rights and coordinating with their countries of origin. He also pointed out that Mauritania hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees under dignified conditions.

On youth migration, Ghazouani acknowledged it as a regional phenomenon stemming from economic and security pressures. He outlined reforms aimed at integrating youth through education modernization, economic diversification, job creation initiatives, and supporting vulnerable social groups.

For the Sahel and Libya, Ghazouani warned that instability in Libya affects the entire Sahel and stressed Mauritania’s support for a Libyan-led comprehensive reconciliation process. He underscored that regional security depends on coordinated efforts to combat instability and terrorism.

In summary, Ghazouani stated that fighting corruption remains the core of his reform agenda. No real progress or security is possible without eradicating corruption and building transparent governance.
