According to The Telegraph, citing informed American sources, the United States may impose restrictions on British officials entering its territory if the UK proceeds with banning the X platform. This threat stems from a scandal involving the “Grok” chatbot program, which has been used to create sexual images involving women and children.
Last week, the UK’s independent Online Safety Regulator, Ofcom, opened an investigation into the “Grok” chatbot after reports surfaced that it had been used to create and share pornographic images, including explicit images of minors, which could be classified as child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Ofcom stated that if violations are confirmed, the company could face a fine of up to 10% of its global revenue or even a ban on the platform.
At the same time, American officials expressed concern that banning X could severely damage the special and privileged relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. According to a source in the U.S. State Department, tensions could arise if the UK moves forward with the ban. The source added that “hell would break loose” in the relations between the two countries if this occurs.
Additionally, the United States is considering interrogating Ofcom officials if they visit the U.S. regarding their involvement in censorship, as indicated by another source.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Sarah Rogers also stated in an interview that the United States is prepared to use “all means” against British Prime Minister Keir Starmer if the X platform is banned. She accused the British government of attempting to suppress political opinions that it finds unappealing.
