For several weeks, the Republic of Mali has been facing an unprecedented security and economic crisis: armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda have imposed a blockade on supply routes, causing a severe fuel shortage, the closure of schools, and the paralysis of transportation and trade.
The United States Embassy in Bamako has urged its citizens to leave the country immediately, reflecting growing international concern.
Malian newspapers have confirmed the effective closure of the Mauritania–Mali border on the Malian side, resulting in serious difficulties for Mauritanian traders and herders, especially those from the Hodh Ech Chargui and Hodh El Gharbi regions.
This blockade deprives Mauritania of an essential economic and human partner — Mali, which has long served as a destination for healthcare, trade, and travel toward Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
In the face of this crisis, Mauritania must not allow Mali to face its challenges alone.
The two nations are bound by faith, history, and fraternity, and Bamako now urgently needs Nouakchott’s diplomatic and political support to restore stability and preserve the vital bond that unites these two Sahelian neighbors.
